LEVEL 3  (Fire Fighter) This is the third level of the program. Members who have completed Level 2 and have been issued gear and are Recruit Fire Fighters. They are allowed to engage in limited emergency scene activities under direct supervision. Emergency scene activities are: staffing a back-up hose, moving equipment to the immediate scene, etc.  Reminder:  You are entry qualified under the direct supervision of an officer.

 

The following tasks have been identified as the minimum requirement for completion of Level 3.

Gross decontamination, proper cleaning, drying, disinfecting and sanitation procedures per guideline

 

 

 

 

 

Ability to service SCBA  (under supervision), knowledge of tape/dates, safety considerations etc.

 

 

 

 

 

Trained in proper use of re-servicing check sheets.

 

 

 

 

 

Properly trained and checked off by shift officer on using cascade system correctly and safely.

 

 

 

 

 

Final testing and mask sanitation procedures.

 

 

 

 

 

NOTE: The Recruit Firefighter is to operate under direct supervision when re-servicing breathing apparatus.  The supervisor will QC, then initial the SCBA to ensure operational readiness.

Identify lighting, box lights, heat scanner location on apparatus.

 

 

 

4) Apparatus assignments and riding procedures

Safety:  *Seat belts; *Stay seated until vehicle is stopped; *No running to vehicle; *No attempting to climb on or off a moving vehicle.

 

 

 

 

 

 Ability to follow directions from Shift Officer.

 

 

 

 

 

5) Hose deployment and evolutions

Hose: Ability to couple hose, pull, drain, and roll, ability to bleed air from charged line, adjust nozzle, flow water and advance 1.75 line.

 

 

 

 

 

Preconnects:  Ability to build triple flat lay pre-connected lines, flake and properly operate.

 

 

 

 

 

Cleaning hose: Ability to set up hose washer; hang properly and safely in tower. Ability to remove hose from tower safely and donut roll and store on shelf

 

 

 

 

 

Hose Loads:  Ability to build a triple flat-lay preconnected line and properly load on apparatus with hose strap through loop and nozzle bale.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Supply Hose:  Ability to assist in loading reverse lay; Forward lay supply lines.

 

 

 

 

Hose Cleaning: Ability to properly operate washer, safely hang hose in tower.

6) Salvage / Overhaul

Ability to perform salvage operations using salvage covers and perform common overhaul procedures utilizing tools and heat scanner.

7) Ventilation – Demonstrated ability to set up an effective ventilation at a working fire.

9) Orientation to emergency scene operations

Traffic Control: For motor vehicle accidents, Ability to lay effective flare pattern, ability to operate portable radio on channel 4 for traffic purposes. Demonstrates proper hand signals with traffic flashlight and flare to control traffic.

Vehicle Fires: Basic understanding and support of operation, jack hose, flake out and support attack crew with tools and lighting.

Structure Fires:  Ability to pull pre-connected lines properly, flake out, ability to hook-up hotel pack, retrieve hand and power tools, ladders and support equipment from attack apparatus. Ability to set-up PPV effectively, and support entry crew operations.

Proficiency Checkoff:  I have reviewed skill knowledge with student and he/she appears ready for a Battalion Chief checkoff.

 

After the tasks have been completed and checked off by an authorized instructor, the member will take this booklet to the Training Division (Training Officer) for review and sign off. Information will be forwarded to the Fire Chief or Deputy for authorization to proceed to the next level. Authorization for issue of equipment will be on a prescribed form (found in your apprenticeship level 1,2, 3 and 4 booklet) which will be signed by the Training Division and the Fire Chief.

 

Once authorization is granted, the following personal protective equipment will be issued: turnout pants and boots. Also, an additional red reflective strip will be added to the back of your helmet (you will now have three Ahash@ marks) signifying your completion of level 3 training.  These hash-marks signified to the incident commander and operation personnel that you are entry qualified, but you are able to work as a back up on entry hose line, etc., and considered a “certified” firefighter.

 

Members completing level 3 are now capable of being utilized at an emergency incident by the incident commander or operation officer for tasks such as staffing a back up hose, or making entry with a line officer.
