LEVEL 4  (Senior Fire Fighter) This is the fourth and final level of the program. Members who have completed Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 have been issued gear and are “certified” Firefighter 1 are considered Senior Fire Fighters. They are allowed to engage in emergency scene activities under supervision of a Line Officer.

 

The following tasks have been identified as the minimum requirement for completion of Level 4.

 

Instructors- DO NOT SIGN OFF UNLESS PROFICIENT. This means they can teach it to others.

1) Complete Firefighter 1 Training

Ability to service SCBA  (under supervision), knowledge of tape/dates, safety considerations etc.

 

 

 

 

 

Trained in proper use of re-servicing check sheets.

 

 

 

 

 

Properly trained and checked off by shift officer on using cascade system correctly and safely.

 

 

 

 

 

Final testing and mask sanitation procedures.

 

 

 

 

 

2) Accountability Program

Can explain G.O.O.  # 421 check in/check out procedures to line officer.

 

 

 

 

 

Knows board locations / Apparatus, Command vehicles

 

 

 

 

 

 Knows about different boards and proper usage

 

 

 

 

3) Apparatus tools and equipment

 

 

 

 

Ability to reservice tools and equipment and place back on the apparatus in the proper location (prove this)..

 

 

Ability to set-up rehab area summer / winter differences

 

 

Identify lighting, box lights, heat scanner location on apparatus.

4) Apparatus assignments and riding procedures

5) Hose deployment and evolutions

 

 

 

Any Officer or Duty Person

 

Hose: Ability to couple hose, pull, drain, and roll, ability to bleed air from charged line, adjust nozzle, flow water and advance 1.75 line.

 

 

 

 

 

Preconnects: Ability to pull, charge and operate effectively any hoseline and nozzle.

 

 

 

 

 

Cleaning hose: Ability to set up hose washer; hang properly and safely in tower. Ability to remove hose from tower safely and donut roll and store on shelf

 

 

 

 

 

Hose Loads:  Ability to build a triple flat-lay preconnected line and properly load on apparatus with hose strap through loop and nozzle bale.  Ability to load forward and reverse lay hose beds accurately.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Supply Hose:  Ability to hook up supply hose to support a water supply at an emergency incident.

 

 

 

 

Hose Cleaning: Ability to properly operate washer, safely hang hose in tower.

 

 

 

6) Salvage / Overhaul

Ability to perform salvage operations using salvage covers and perform common overhaul procedures utilizing tools and equipment.

Safety:  Ability to properly use the CO Monitor and heat scanner.

 

 

 

 

 

Knows when to use SCBA during overhaul.

 

 

 

 

 

Salvage cover deployment:  Ability to re-service and roll salvage covers and put in service

 

 

 

 

 

7) Ventilation

Ability to set up and initiate effective ventilation, vertical and horizontal.

8) Equipment Operation/set up

 Ability to safely operate a Chain Saw and K- Saw utilizing all safety equipment.

 

 

 

 

 

Ability to operate Hurst pump and tools effectively (i.e., chaps, eye and hearing protection)

 

 

 

 

 

Proven ability to operate a Generator and hook up lighting using pigtails cord reels, extension cords and portable lights

 

 

 

 

 

9) Orientation to emergency scene operations

 

 

 

Any Officer or Duty Person

 

Traffic Control: For motor vehicle accidents, Ability to lead the traffic portion of an incident, traffic patterns, commo, and can set up a landing zone for helicopters.

 

 

 

LT or higher

 

Proven ability to safely attack and control a vehicle fire, utilizing all equipment necessary.

 

 

 

 

 

Structure Fires:  Ability to pull pre-connected lines properly, flake out, ability to hook-up hotel pack, retrieve hand and power tools, ladders and support equipment from attack apparatus. Ability to set-up PPV effectively, and support entry crew operations.

 

 

 

 

 

Donns an SCBA correctly (minute or less)

Knows location of all tools in first out Apparatus

 

 

 

 

 

Demonstrates knowledge of serviceability of PPE

 

 

 

 

 

 Lead a minimum of 2 firefighters working as a team to ladder a roof and perform vertical ventilation. Must perform task safely, maintain control of personnel, and finish each task in a timely manner

11)  Proficiency Check-off:

 

 

 

Correct knowledge and proper terminology of all tools and equipment on apparatus.

 

 

 

 

Ability to operate accountability boards.

 

 

 

Proven ability to follow directions and take orders on an emergency incident.

 

 

 

12)  Operator Training:

 

 

General Purpose operator training completed. 

 

 

Squad operator training completed.

 

 

Proven ability to make entry with direct supervision and carry out directives for suppression or emergency scene mitigation.

 

 

13)  Proven proficiency in municipal and Wildland firefighting working as a team member:

 

Captain or Battalion Chief

14)  Proven proficiency in set up and operation of Hurst tools, airbags and cribbing.

15)  Proven ability in communications and incident size-ups.

After the tasks have been completed and checked off by an authorized instructor, the member will take this booklet to the Training Division (Training Officer) for review and sign off. Authorization for issue of equipment will be on a prescribed form (found in your apprenticeship level 1,2, 3 and 4 booklet) which will be signed by the Training Division and the Fire Chief.

 

An additional red reflective strip will be added to the back of your helmet (you will now have four Ahash@ marks) signifying you as a Senior Firefighter and have completed all 4 levels of training.  These hash-marks signified to the incident commander and operation personnel that you are knowledgeable and proficient as a firefighter.
