A
fire damaged a house on Hurst Road on Saturday and ousted the family who lives
there, according to Chief Jeff Tucker of the North Star Volunteer Fire
Department. A dog died in the blaze.
Smoke
and fire damage was focused on the living room, Tucker said.
“It’s
going to take it a little bit to clean it up,” he said.
The
house is located at 3450 Hurst Road and is owned by Gary and Gabriella
Hilliard, according to the Fairbanks North Star Borough property tax database.
The
fire originated in the furnace and spread to the house, according to Ernie
Misewicz, the Fairbanks fire marshal who also volunteers for North Star. The
family does not have insurance and is staying with relatives.
The
residents were home when the blaze began and called 911 about 4 p.m., Tucker
said. Firefighters knocked down the fire quickly in the home, which is a
geodesic dome with a frame building attached.
The
North Pole Fire Department also responded to the blaze.
