Firefighters from the North Star Volunteer Fire Department were on scene
at a medical call Monday morning, March 27, 2006, when, at 10:44 AM, they were
dispatched to a reported structure fire at
Firefighters and engines arrived on scene within 6 minutes and found a 24
by 60 foot single story residential home with light smoke showing from the back
and underneath the building. This building is a combined single-wide
mobile home built in the 1960’s with an attached full length log “wannigan”
type structure. Firefighters accessed the area underneath the floor by
cutting through the skirting and the floor of an inside room in the back of the
building, and found a small smoldering fire underneath in the timbers
supporting the structure and in wood chips covering the area under the
floor. The situation was under control by 11:00 AM, and firefighters
remained on scene to monitor the situation and to pick up equipment.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 11:58 AM and returned to quarters.
A total of 4 fire engines, 13 firefighters, and 2 Support Div. personnel
responded from the North Star Volunteer Fire Dept., responding from the medical
scene and two closest fire stations, and staffing up two fire stations in the
event of another emergency.
The building is valued at approximately $25,000, however Firefighters were careful to only remove enough of the building’s structure to locate the source of the smoke and damage was limited to less than $5,000. Firefighters were able to tackle this fire very quickly as they were called by an alert occupant that called 911 as soon as he smelled smoke. The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined and it is unknown if the building is insured. The occupant was offered assistance by Red Cross, however denied assistance.
