FROM: Jerry Hanson, Deputy Chief DATE: April 26, 2007
For Immediate Release: North Pole, Alaska.
Last Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at approx.
10:13 am in the morning, the North Star Volunteer Fire Department was
dispatched to a reported possible structure / wildland fire on Parham McCormick
Road, off of Plack Road. The caller was
reporting an abandoned building fully involved and spreading to the surrounding
Wildlands. The North Star Volunteer
Fire Department responded with three fire engines and a total of 12
firefighters. While en route dispatch
advised the fire was in an abandoned building located well off the
roadway. Mutual Aid assistance was
requested from Fairbanks Area Forestry to help with the threat to the Wildlands
and one engine from the Fort Wainwright Fire Department for one Engine Company
to help back fill NSVFD Station One.
First arriving units were on scene at 10:25
am, and reported an approx. 20 by 20 foot building that was fully involved and
collapsing to the ground. The building
was located over 250 feet off the roadway down a little used trail, and the fire
was spreading to surrounding trees and brush.
NSVFD firefighters deployed hose lines to surround the burning area and
extinguished the fire. Fairbanks Area
Forestry personnel arrived on scene and determined the fire did not spread to
the surrounding area. The fire spread
to an area of approx. 200 feet in diameter, and was under control at 10:35 am,
and the building was totally destroyed.
The age and type of building could not be determined.
The cause of the fire could not be
determined. The property is owned by
Polar Star Lands, LLC, and appears to be an old homestead. There were no injuries as a result of this
fire.
