Car destroyed in fire, driver escapes

The North Star Fire Department was called to put out a car fully engulfed in flames Monday evening on Smallwood Trail.

The mid-90s Toyota Camry apparently overheated and caught fire as the driver drove it up a hill. The woman
escaped unharmed.

“The wheels were burning,” said witness Randall Pugh, a nearby resident who was alerted to the blaze by his
wife, who saw the smoke. “It was completely totaled.”

Firefighters agreed, and were unable to salvage the car, which was valued at $4,000. The North Star Fire
Department is often called to put out vehicle fires that stem from too many cars being plugged into an
outlet or when a vehicle is set on fire as a result of vandalism, but authorities said it was unusual to
respond to a call of a car catching fire while driving on the road.
