North Pole, Alaska: A fire broke out Sunday morning at Flint Hills Refinery, though production and refining operations were not interrupted.
The fire was reported about 10:30 a.m. according to Jeff Cook, director of external affairs for the North Pole refinery. It began in a service building near the processing unit, he said. A sprinkler system in the building was activated and extinguished the fire, he said.
“Everything worked like it’s supposed to,” he said.
As a precaution, Cook said the refinery was required to notify the North Pole Fire Department, North Star Volunteer Fire Department and the Fairbanks North Star Borough Hazards Materials unit. All responded to the scene. The Fairbanks Fire Department was called and responded for mutual aid.
Cook said there were no injuries in the incident.

Give them the brush…off |
|
North Pole, Alaska: With the recent snowfalls and the changes in temperatures most of
our street signs are covered with snow & frost. The frost makes it hard and in some cases impossible to see street signs
and addresses. Also hanging and bending trees create serious problems. Poorly visible street signs and address may delay
response by emergency responders (fire, police or EMS).

Please help local emergency services and your neighborhood. Give the street signs a brush. Clean off the snow and frost
build up on the signs. Also make sure your house number is visible from the road or street. Time is a precious commodity.
Even a few minutes delay could mean the difference between life and death. Take a few minutes to ensure your family is safe.

North Pole, Alaska: Newsminer - A pair of rural volunteer fire departments are working together to improve preparedness and, their leaders hope, better their departments' fire protection ratings.
And that could lead to lower the insurance rates for area property owners.
Chief Mitch Flynn of the Steese Area Volunteer Fire Department said his department is conducting joint training exercises with the North Star Volunteer Fire Department.
North Star Chief Jeff Tucker said the joint training effort began last year and recently became more structured.

SMOKE ALARM - ALERTS FAMILY |
|
North Pole, Alaska: The North Star Volunteer Fire Department and North Pole Fire autoaid responded to a structure fire after
residents were alerted to a fire in their crawl space when the smoke alarm went off. Occupants gathered their pets and
left the dwelling and called 911. Upon arrival firefighters found a 30’ x 40’ house with moderate smoke throughout the interior.
Fire fighters entered and found a small fire in the crawl space around the base of the furnace. Fire was extinguished and the house cleared
of smoke. No injuries reported.
It appears the furnace has some issues in the past and a possibly leak in the fuel line was the most probable cause for the fire. Leaking fuel was ignited by the burner.
Due to the quick and correct actions by the occupants and agressive attack by firefighters damage was limited to the dwelling. The home was turned back over to the owner / occupants.
