Established in 1975, the North Star Volunteer Fire Department was founded with 15 volunteer members and averaged nearly 10 calls a year. The original station still stands today, albeit has changed significantly over the years.

What was once 2 bays, 2 fire apparatus, and a chief's office, has now expanded to 5 stations, 12 fire apparatus, 50 volunteers, 11 full-time staff, and houses 16 volunteers who live at the various stations spread out across the 110 square mile Fire Service Area. The North Star Volunteer Fire Department is now the premier volunteer fire department in the interior of Alaska, running an average of 1,200 calls per year. In addition to responding to structure fires and emergency medical calls, we also have the ability to respond to motor vehicle accidents, hazardous material response, wildfires, off-road rescues, water rescues, and structural collapse.
